Chapter Ten

The banging continued, relentless. Head pounding, Keira forced herself out of bed.

“Keira!”

Delilah? Why couldn’t she phone? Then she remembered. She’d turned her phone off. “I’m coming,” she whispered, clinging to the stair rail as she made her way down.

“Keira! I know you’re in there. If you don’t let me in I’m going home to get my key. That will take me thirty minutes I haven’t got and—”

Keira shoved the deadbolt back, and the banging stopped. She unlocked the door and then Delilah was staring at her.

Her friend’s irate expression turned to concern. “Damn, Keira. You look like shit.”

Keira turned and staggered to the lounge. Grabbing a throw, she wrapped it around her and collapsed on the sofa. “Tablets in my handbag.”

A minute later, a glass of water was shoved into her hands. She opened her eyes and plucked two tablets out of Delilah’s palm then swallowed them down with water.

“You should see a doctor. Please tell me you’re not pregnant.”

“I’ve got a headache, Delilah, not morning sickness, and correct me if I’m wrong, but pregnancy requires a man in my life.

“Well these headaches aren’t right.”

“I saw the doctor last week. He prescribed aspirin, but not too many—something about a rebound from the medication. But anti-inflammatory works better. I think I need glasses. I’m eating well so I can’t be that bad. He said to go back if things don’t improve, but well, it’s been a stressful few days.”

“Must have been. Brandon’s a changed man. What did you do to him?”

Keira winced. “Where you’re concerned, told him a few home truths… I’m sorry Delilah. It had to be done.”

Her friend stared at her. Horror dawned in her eyes followed rapidly by anger. “Oh God, Keira, you didn’t.” She jumped up. “Oh my God! You did! Why? You know William didn’t want that.”

She began to cry and Keira got angry. “He guessed, Delilah. Tavey said something, and then it became too cruel not to explain it all. It’s better this way. Now he understands the situation he can stop casting you in the role of evil stepmother, and you kept your promise to William. Now I have a splitting headache, so could you please go and leave me alone?”

“Brandon called. He said you threw him out.”

“Brandon and I are incompatible. He thinks I’m a freak.”

“Did he say that?”

“All but.”

“So, maybe you are incompatible, but he obviously cares. You can’t keep pushing men away like this. You have lots of friends who think you’re a freak and tell you so to your face. You don’t throw them out.”

“I don’t care what they think!”

Delilah fell silent and Keira gratefully closed her eyes. The painkillers were taking effect.

“So—”

“Delilah, please.”

“You two got on then.”

“Until I threw him out.”

“What about Zamba? Is he going to rethink—”

“No. I backed off. He’s so stubborn he’d make a stand purely to annoy me. If Elya’s book doesn’t make him realise what Zamba will be missing out on nothing will.” Keira opened her eyes and sat up. “You know, I feel better.
